Friday night formula racing

The formula racers were offered up a treat last night at their regularly scheduled 5:30 race. Normal conditions are that the breeze will die off as the evening progresses so sailors rig a bigger sail than needed for the first race to have enough power for later on. Yesterday evening was different. At the skippers’ meeting, race office John Craig reviewed the weather forecast, winds solid 28mph with gusts over 30, and gave the sailors a choice. Did they want to race formula or get in some freestyle and slalom practice. The choice was made and instead of the normal 10-11m sail, the sailors rigged up their 5-6m sails.

As always, if you see yourself in any of the photos, please add a comment with your name. Then I can group all your photos together for you like this: Steve Bodner, Al Mirel, David Wells, Jean Rathle.

Amgen Tour of California Bike Race

Today’s stage of the Amgen Tour of California started at 8:30am in Sausalito in a torrential downpour. But since this marked the first time a pro cycling event would ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, I didn’t want to miss it. I had my spot staked out at one of the abandoned bunkers overlooking the bridge. By 8:45, all car traffic across the bridge had been cleared off the bridge and stopped in both directions. After a parade of motorcyle police and other support vehicles, the peloton made its way across and into the Presidio. The race then continued down the coast to Santa Cruz.

Stair climb race to the top of the Bank of America building

At first, I wasn’t too excited about shooting a running race in the stairwell of a highrise office building but it turned out pretty well. The view from the top was amazing.

Check out the photos of Climb California.

San Francisco Cable Car Chase

This morning I shot photos at the ANA Cable Car Chase, a 5.67 mile run on the cable car routes of San Francisco. I ended up hiking about half the course to get to the spot I wanted to shoot from, on California St. at the top of Nob Hill. The I rode the cable car back down the hill and got some shots of the finishers.

2006 Bridge to Bridge race

After work, I headed over to the Golden Gate Bridge and hiked out to mid-span. At 5:30 sharp, the whole fleet of Australian 18′s, kitesurfers, and windsurfers came flying under the bridge on their way downwind to the Oakland Bay Bridge. Check out the photos.

Xterra Scramble at Mount Tamalpais

Pacwest Athletics hosted the first Xterra Scramble at Mount Tamalpais. With both a 5k and 12k option, there was something for everyone. The course featured some great singletrack trail and even a jump over a creek. Hopefully they’ll do the event again next year.
