Weekend windsurfing at kitesurfing recap

This was one action-packed windsurfing weekend. It started on Friday night with a formula race at St. Francis Yacht club and a Windsurfing magazine helicopter photo shoot. Here are Steve Bodner and Seth Besse heading back to the beach after the racing.

Then on Saturday the San Francisco Boardsailing Association and Windsurfing Magazine had organized a whole day of activities: swap meet, safety demos, Coast Guard motor lifeboat and helicopter demo, the Ronstan Bay Challenge distance windsurfing and kitesurfing race, and another helicopter photo shoot. Due to the seasonably warm weather, it took a while for the wind to assume its normal direction and velocity.

Here’s junior sailor Marion Lepert as she cranks back upwind from Treasure Island.

And here’s John Gomes in the kitesurfing division.

Wyatt Miller freestyle windsurfing clinic

I got to Crissy Field just as Wyatt Miller was finishing up with his freestyle windsurfing clinic. He and his students were out on the water working on some of their moves.

Check out Wyatt’s site to find when and were he’ll be hosting his next clinic.

Happy Memorial Day

I was going through a few old photos and happen to come across these flag images from a trip to Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. In honor of all of the men and women who have served our country…

Friday night racing

There was a great turnout for Friday night formula windsurfing racing at St. Francis Yacht Club with more sailors participating than I have seen in a long time. All of the regulars were there, including a few junior sailors. Here’s one with a nice jibe just after rounding the windward mark at Anita Rock.

Check out the rest of the windsurfing photos. I also labeled these photos with the keywords “Friday Night” and “May 28 2010“.

Sunday windsurfing on the bay

I grabbed a boat for a couple hours this afternoon to get a different perspective on the windsurfers at Crissy Field. Instead of shooting from shore as I do most often, I headed outside of the Golden Gate to get a view back toward Crissy Field and the City. It’s not often that all the factors line up – wind, swell, sun, boat, sailors. Today was one of those days.

While most of the sailors stayed farther downwind, there were a few brave sailors that were riding the waves at Fort Point or outside The Gate.

Here’s a shot of Wyatt Miller navigating the big swell and big traffic and one of him mid-trick. Click on the photos below or on this link to see all the windsurfing photos.

Back closer to the beach, there was still more traffic to contend with. Drifting through the buzz of windsurfers was a bit like standing in the middle of the freeway during rush hour, non-stop action.

Windsurfing photo shoot today

I’ve got a boat today from 2-4 and will be in the vicinity of the golden gate bridge shooting windsurfing action photos. Make sure to sail by so I can get some shots of you. Photos will be posted later in the day.

UPDATE:
Here is the recap of the windsurfing photo shoot.

Candlestick gusts to near 40mph

I got the Iwindsurf.com alert first for Anita Rock and then for Candlestick. There was no question that it was windy. As I rolled up to Candlestick, I could see the bay was solid whitecaps. The wind about took the door of my car off as I opened it. I grabbed my tripod out of the trunk of the car and headed over to the point above the launch. There was no way I could hold the camera still in all that wind. I about got blown off the rocks a few times, but what a great spot to watch the action.

Friday afternoon windsurfing at Candlestick

The whole past week has been full of windy day forecasts, but until today I hadn’t been able to get any photos. I stopped down at Crissy Field on Thursday just as all the kitesurfers were slogging their way back in from their course race – no wind left. Finally, today there were some sailors out at Candlestick Park and the water was covered with whitecaps. Check out the photos…

I think sailing might have been the fastest way to get home as the freeway was packed.
