Photo published in Standup Journal

I just found out that one of my photos made the Summer edition of the Standup Journal magazine. This photo is from the 2009/2010 Mavericks Surf Contest. This standup paddle surfer jumped on one of the waves in between heats of the contest.

2010 Mavericks big wave surfing contest photos

The captain of the 28 ft. rigid inflatable boat I was riding on had departed from San Francisco at 6am to deliver the boat to Half Moon Bay. He headed under the Golden Gate Bridge and prepared to make the left turn and the run south down the coast. Through the fog he could still make out the giant waves that were breaking and preventing his turn. He proceeded farther offshore hoping to find the point where the breaking waves turned to rolling ocean swell. Mile after mile the waves were still breaking. After traveling 15 miles straight west, he saw his first opening and made the turn south.

Then getting in to the Half Moon Bay harbor was another feat. He had to wait for the right wave and then power down it just like the surfers, trying to out run it before it started breaking.

He survived the trip and we were able to get back out and watch some awesome surf. Some of the sets were absolutely monstrous. Click on the photo below to see the full gallery of pictures of the 2010 Mavericks surfing contest. Enjoy the photos!

I’ve got a spot on one of the boats going out for the big wave surfing contest at Mavericks tomorrow!!! Stay tuned for photos.

Until then, click on the photo below to check out some of my photos from the 2008 contest…

Mavericks is breaking

The forecast looked like Mavericks might be the only thing surfable so I hopped in the car and headed down to Half Moon Bay. There were about 10-15 surfers out waiting patiently for the big sets to roll through

Mavericks Big Wave Surfing Contest

As I drove down Great Highway on the way to Half Moon Bay, I could see that the swell was looking good (and big). There was hardly any breeze. And the sun was out.

I parked at the airport and rode the shuttle bus out to Pigeon Point. Before heading to the beach, I hiked up the cliff to get an overview. At 8:30, people were already packed along the cliff. The break was along way off and the only way to get a good view was through a strong pair of binoculars. Down on the beach, the organizers had set up a big monitor showing and announcing all the action from the first heats.

There were 38 people on my boat tour aboard a 45 ft. fishing boat. We cruised out of the harbor, around the reef, and then out to the lineup. The harbor patrol had set up two buoys marking a line that all motorized spectator boats must stay behind. Waverunners and kayaks were allowed to get in closer.

The view from the boat was amazing and really made you feel like you were in the lineup with the surfers.
