Weekend windsurfing at kitesurfing recap

This was one action-packed windsurfing weekend. It started on Friday night with a formula race at St. Francis Yacht club and a Windsurfing magazine helicopter photo shoot. Here are Steve Bodner and Seth Besse heading back to the beach after the racing.

Then on Saturday the San Francisco Boardsailing Association and Windsurfing Magazine had organized a whole day of activities: swap meet, safety demos, Coast Guard motor lifeboat and helicopter demo, the Ronstan Bay Challenge distance windsurfing and kitesurfing race, and another helicopter photo shoot. Due to the seasonably warm weather, it took a while for the wind to assume its normal direction and velocity.

Here’s junior sailor Marion Lepert as she cranks back upwind from Treasure Island.

And here’s John Gomes in the kitesurfing division.

2009 Ronstan Bridge to Bridge race

I missed the start of the Ronstan Bridge to Bridge race this year, but caught a few pics of the sailors as they were coming in. The race is a 3-way competition between the windsurfers, the Australian 18 skiffs, and the kitesurfers to see who can sail the downwind course from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Bay Bridge in the shortest time.

Here’s Steve Sylvester crossing tacks with the Adventure Cat while sailing back upwind after the race.

First ever kiteboard course racing world championship

Yesterday marked the conclusion of the first ever kiteboard course racing world championship. After countless hours of work translating sailing rules to fit the kite racing style, building specialized boards to go high upwind and deep downwind, and gathering the best sailors from around the world, the St. Francis Yacht Club put on a great event. The beach at Crissy Field was covered with kites and spectators.

Kitesurfing at Ocean Beach

The last couple days have been really windy, with gusts approaching 30mph. It’s normally the bay that gets windy but today the ocean was the place to be. 8 kitesurfers were braving the cold air and water.

Finally a windy day!

After a week of waiting, the wind finally came. It brought with it the fog and cold. I got in a little time on the windsurfing slalom gear and was able to record a top speed of 32mph even though there was a lot of chop due to the strong wind and ebb tide. After sailing, I got a few shots of everyone getting ready for the Thursday night kitesurfing race hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club. Kitesurfing

2007 Bridge to Bridge Race

It’s that time of year again. The Australian 18′s are in town for a regatta and to challenge the local windsurfers and kitesurfers in an all-out downwind race from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Bay Bridge. I headed down to get some shots of the start of the race. Here’s a shot of the start of the race.
