Surprise session at Crissy Field

It looked like yesterday was going to be another foggy day with not much wind, but boy was that wrong. The fogged backed off to just on the outer side of the Golden Gate Bridge and the wind cranked up.

You should have been here earlier

I checked out the Exploratorium Cam and could see that it was really windy down at Crissy. The bay was covered with whitecaps and sand on the beach was blowing everywhere. 30 sailors were ripping back and forth and coming right next to the beach for big jibes and freestyle maneuvers. Perfect for photos. I grabbed my gear and headed out.

As I pulled in the parking lot, I could already sense something was up. I couldn’t see many sails out on the water. All but two or three of the sailors were on the beach carrying their gear back to their cars. Soheil Zahedi had rigged a little bigger sail and was still out enjoying the day.

Check out the pics.

Evening slalom training at Crissy

It didn’t look all that windy last night at Crissy and there was a 3 knot current so most sailors didn’t venture off the beach. Steve was absolutely flying on his slalom board and 7.3m North Sail, doing laps from the Golden Gate Bridge down to Alcatraz and back.

Great Saturday afternoon windsurfing at Crissy Field

The formula windsurfing fleet was off in Berkeley for the Calcup race leaving Crissy for the freestyle sailors. Another awesome day of sailing with winds approaching 30mph.

First windsurfing photos of the 2009 season

It was a little chilly, not all that windy, and there were only a few sailors out, but for me it marked the start of the 2009 windsurfing season (at least from a photography perspective). Here’s a shot of David Wells cruising past Alcatraz on his formula gear.

There aren’t ever many pictures of me, but here’s one of me testing out the 600mm Nikon lens at Crissy Field.

Photographer at Crissy Field

I stopped down at the St. Francis Yacht Club and talked to a couple of friends who were just getting off the water after sailing in the Elvstrom Zellerbach regatta. The wind had come up quite a bit and all the sailors looked like they had gotten in plenty of sailing over the weekend. One managed to break the bottom section of his laser mast. Since the wind had come up, the windsurfers had headed out onto the water at Crissy Field. Sand was blowing everywhere and the sky was very hazy, less than ideal photography conditions, but I wasn’t the only one out taking photos. Actually, I’m not sure this guy even noticed all the windsurfing action. He was totally focused on making sure he got a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Crissy Field Swap Meet and Afternoon Session

Today was the day for the annual Crissy Field windsurfing swap meet, the day when everyone drags all their old gear out of the garage and tries to convince other people it is the best stuff ever. This year was a beautiful, sunny day and there was lots of good gear to be had. Thanks to all the people who stopped by to check out my photos. I’ve got a ton more now since Saturday afternoon was such a great session.

Tips for 2008 windsurfing season…

  1. Go to the beach
  2. Windsurf
  3. Check shawnrdavis.com for your photos

Cold and windy at Crissy Field

The sun was shining and it was really cold but that didn’t keep the windsurfers from heading out today. I put on my fleece and windbreaker with the hood up and struggled against the wind to make it to the edge of the water. I only lasted a short while but managed to get in a few good shots.
