One sailor is dead, several were rescued, but some of the crew are still missing. Here’s a photo of the boat competing in the 2006 Big Boat Series.

The Fabiola is the largest ship to visit any North American port. She’s over 1,200 feet long and 158 feet wide.

It is temporarily at the dock in Richmond just around the corner from the Red Oak Victory ship. It’s got until May before it heads south on the rest of its journey. The only part of the ship available for touring this time was the foredeck. Here are a few photos.

I was surprised to find the ship was decked in wood.


I imagine this holding warning signs of all the hazardous materials onboard.


And somewhere behind this door is the special quarters built for President Roosevelt when the USS Iowa took him across the Atlantic during WWII to meet with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin.

All fleets ran 2 races, followed by a distance race around Alcatraz.

The beach was packed with spectators waiting to see if their team was a winner.

Then in the afternoon, the freestyle sailors did another double elimination freestyle contest. Here’s Paulo dos Reis leading Phil McGain and Wilhelm Schurmann to the windward mark in the long distance race. And here’s Tyson Poor in the freestyle contest.
