Exploring the Columbia River Gorge

Since there was no wind and no windsurfing today, I went off to explore the other parts of the Columbia River Gorge. I checked out the Columbia River Discovery Center and then drove down the Historic Columbia River Highway between Hood River and The Dalles.

I also followed a route known as the Fruit Loop past all the orchards and farm stands in the areas. One stop yielded some delicious cherries and pears. Another stop produced some cool photos of an abandoned fruit packing plant.

Oregon road trip

In an effort to actually experience some summer-like weather, escaped the fog of San Francisco and headed out on a road trip to Oregon. I went north up Interstate 5 but got off and hit the back roads.

backroads of Oregon

The first stop was Crater Lake National Park. I spent two nights in the lodge, toured the lake by boat, did some hiking, and had dinner in the lodge. Here’s a view of “The Phantom Ship” rock formation.

Camping in the redwoods

Last weekend I headed up to Humboldt Redwoods State Park for some camping. Luckily, they have signs to let visitors know where the trees are in case people have problems finding something hundreds of feet tall and more than thirty feet around.

Sunset and surf at Ocean Beach

After nearly a whole week of mostly unsurfable conditions, the surfers were back at Ocean Beach today getting in a few rides. It was a little too dark for getting any action shots, but I was able to get some cool photos of the sunset.

Muir Woods redwoods

On Saturday there wasn’t much in the way to surf so I took a trip up to Muir Woods to check out the redwoods. The trees are massive and often captured from far away. I decided to get up close instead. Here’s one of the pics.

Note-to-self: Next time go to Muir Woods right when it opens. Anything after that and it will be overrun with tourists.

Weather finally clearing up

After days of rain, the skies finally started to clear. Here’s a shot of Ocean Beach at sunset with the Cliff House in the distance.

Bird under attack

The weather was grey and rainy today so I didn’t want to leave the house. While sitting on the couch, I looked out the window and noticed a bird sitting in a tree outside. A flock of other birds were swooping in trying to attach the bird on its perch. They never actually came in contact with each other. It looked more like territorial intimidation tactics more than anything.

Full moon sets over Pacific Ocean

A couple mornings ago I woke up a little earlier than normal and noticed that there was a nearly full moon in the sky. Thinking about it a bit more, I thought I might be able to catch it setting over the ocean just about the same time the sun was coming up. Well, I had the right idea but was off with the timing just a bit. The sun came up at 7:15am but the moon didn’t set until 8:15am. By that time the moon was barely visible. I’ll have to check out the sun and moon times more closely and give it another shot. Here’s what I was able to salvage out of the excursion.

Cumulus Clouds in San Francisco

It’s common to wake up in San Francisco and look out the window to find nothing but gray fog. On the rare occasion, it might even be sunny outside. Big, puffy , white, cumulus clouds are something that just doesn’t occur very often around here. This morning there were clouds everywhere. Usually, I have my camera with me, but not today. By the time I got around to making a few photos, most of the clouds had moved off to the east. The shot below is from Baker Beach in San Francisco and has the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
